In class, it’s called “basics.” Every martial arts student learns how to breathe, to stand, to step, and the best way to deliver an effective block, punch, or kick. It’s all here, illustrated with a generous number of photographs showing Hillson and his colleagues and students performing the moves used in Tae Kwon Do forms and three-step attack-and-defense practice.
Also covered are “releases,” which are self-defense techniques used for getting away from an attack that starts with a grab.
Designed for use by beginning self-defense students, this book will
also help other martial artists refine their technique or, if arriving at Tae Kwon Do from another discipline, understand subtle differences in the arts.

About the Author
Ted Hillson began training in 1972 and received a First Dan in Tae Kwon Do in 1977.
In 1999 he received an Eighth Dan from Grandmaster Ted Volrath, head and founder of Martial Arts for the Handicapable, Inc. It was a gift an and honor.
In 2007 Hillson received a Ninth Dan as a surprise from colleagues, peers, and friends at a Black Belt Review Board of North America Martial Arts Association. It was another honor and gift of recognition.
Hillson presently resides in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and teaches martial arts full time at several area colleges and regional studios. He is also administers South Central Tae Kwon Do Association, LLC, as head instructor and is a Director of Chung Do Kwan USA, LLC.

An invaluable resources for every martial artist

As a student of Master Hillson for over 10 years I am always amazed at how he notices and corrects the smallest things in my technique that always make the biggest differences. This book is a much needed addendum to his first book, and to personal training.
The photos and analysis of stances alone are worth the price of the book. So many students miss that, and in doing so put their entire body out of position for their upper body technique. The analysis of the blocking movements and application of those blocks outside of their first learned use is another section that will surely be well read and reviewed.
Master Hillson's years of training have surely produced enough insight to fill many more books like this and it is a very welcome addition to my library and to the libraries of my students and classmates.

Add To Your Martial Arts Library

Master Hillson has devoted much of his life to studying, teaching and researching the traditional
Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do style.
I have a couple copies of the first book which I've brought with me on Tae Kwon Do trips to share with other schools who were fascinated by the book. They also purchased copies to have at their schools as an excellent teaching guide and reference; and; also; one copy to keep at home as a reference.
Master Hillson offers detailed writing and graphics in his books that are extremely helpful in learning a
traditional style that have been primarily handed down over the decades and taught by rote.
Whether you've only been studying classic Tae Kwon Do for one month or several decades, there will always be something to learn and something of value with Master Ted Hillson's extensive knowledge and experience and any of his books.
Make the investment and add to your martial arts library.

One of the better Martial Arts Technique guides

I found this book concise, well focused, and well written.
This is a super useful book. I particularly like the emphasis on posture and avoiding repetitive stress injury.Injuring yourself in the process of training (in order to learn) to defend one's self from harm & improve your health is an all too common irony! I wish I had read this 20 years ago before I got all my repetitive stress injuries.
Also, Hillson does a very nice job framing the context of how Chung Do Kwan developed stylistically. An effective guide for the mechanics of the techniques, but more so, as an Instructor I worry in this day & age that when my students have access to a zillion You Tube clips to pick up/mimic technique that thoughtful descriptions of how, why, the varying approaches will get lost in the shuffle. Thankfully a text like this is now available.
