Vital guide to an amazing and brilliant camera

Both the Nikon Coolpix P900 and this book are kinda hard to review and rate. The camera is so complex, and Nikon has decided not to include a paper manual in a $600 camera that is now selling at MSRP, which I think is really shoddy -- there is plenty of room in the large box, and the idea of using a downloaded pdf that is massive is preposterous. How you gonna lug a computer around with your camera stuff? Well, all the information about this massively flexible camera is included in Mr. White's book. Particularly in the beginning, I found it hard to follow. For some reason, he begins with short discussions of the camera as it comes out of the box with enough settings to go out the door and shoot. But he does not really explore the entire setup menu until something like chapter 7. I would have moved it up much closer to the beginning. His chapters on the menus and features, once he got going, were really comprehensive and well-covered. There is really not any other choice at this point, so if you are looking for a comprehensive manual that covers the mammoth features and the few questionable decisions Nikon made (no raw files, apparent restriction on panoramas to only wide angle, for example). So while not the best organized camera book I have read and not the easiest to follow, this really does cover everything and earns the five stars, I think.
Addition 10/15: Many of the features and settings do not explain why Mr. White makes the suggested choices. Occasionally he does explain why, but, for the most part, this information is missing. This is in contrast to David Busch's books that always explain why he recommends his settings. Otherwise, this is a great book and essential for shooters who want to be able to make use of the amazing features of this amazing camera.

Great book for using a great camera!

I cannot say enough good about is book! I picked up one of the first P900's to hit Houston, TX right after the release date and have been having a blast learning how to use the camera to its best advantage. I had been reading the Nikon manual since before the launch and read it again after getting the camera. The Nikon manual is very helpful in understanding how to change settings, etc., but this book explains what the settings mean and the implications of using them. White gives useful examples with accompanying example pics. When you read the book, read the 200+ page Nikon manual along with it. If you buy a P900, be sure to buy this book!

Although the book states that it's not a replacement for the official Nikon Coolpix P900 manual, but I found that the book explains many things better and in plain language. So, I found myself using this book more often than the official manual due to the ease of its use.

original was great , I don't know what this revision adds

I agree with the other reviewer that this text is a classical by Erich Lehmann. It is great that this book which has been out of print for many years is back in print with a new publisher. There is a lot of wisdom conveyed in this book along with very useful nonparametric methods that stand the test of time. I cannot comment on the publication quality of the reprinted edition as I still have (in excellent condition) my copy of the original 1975 publication that was published by Holden-Day.
Lehmann always writes eloquently and his treatment is always authoritative and accurate. However, most of his texts are advanced theoretical books for graduate students in statistics. This one is very different. As he says in his preface, "The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to nonparametric methods for the analysis and planning of comparative studies." As such he has written it for practitioners. It is filled with illustrative examples of the techniques and intuitive descriptions. There is some mathematics and many exercises at the end of the chapters, but it is intended as a reference text as well as a text for an introductory course. He is very successful in this endeavor.

I have found it very useful over the years and still use it as a reference. In fact, I am sometimes asked as a consultant what procedures are available to test for trends in data. When a nonparametric approach appears warranted, I often refer them to Chapter 7 in this book. It gives a wonderful treatment of tests for independence and provides insight into the tests that are powerful against the alternative hypothesis of a trend over time.

A classic printed and binded like a ... cheap novel

This absolute classic is out of print for decades. I was so excited that Prentice Hall reprinted it in 1998 in paperback. It is disturbing that the publisher treated it like a ... cheap novel. This paperback is binded and printed in the worst quality possible that it [may] fall apart in two weeks.

By far the best available history of native peoples adapting to and incorporating horses into their cultures.

This is the best available book on this subject. Yes, it is an academic study (each chapter is followed by a notes section), but I find the writing to be quite good and the whole book well-written and an extremely informative read. The book has many illustrations, some of them rare period photos, and some of the black and white photos of representative landscapes were a bit blurry and not so useful. There's a nice section of color plates, as well. The author's overall approach is to blend history (drawn partly from contemporary accounts, a particularly rich source for the Southern Cone), ethnography and archaeology into his narrative.

I would quibble a little with the title. The book is only nominally "worldwide" because two "continent" sections are brief. He looks at Australia, South Africa and New Zealand rather quickly, with the main portion of the book on North and South America. The South African section has a too cursory account of the fascinating story of how some groups became mounted and in effect formed a new people (much as happened in areas of the Americas). Perhaps that will be another book.

In the long portion about North America, he discusses particular areas, quite varied in responses to horses and in ecosystem (he gets a bit into how horses altered these, not enough covered for my taste). These include the Southern plains, the Great Basin, the Pacific Northwest and California. Not all readers will agree, but I found the section on the Comanches the best, and found his comparison between the Metis (Canadian) and the Comancheros (New Mexican) to be especially interesting.

In the equally long portion about South America, he covers in most detail Guajira (a peninsula in Venezuela with an especially formidable mounted people called the Wayuu, who remained independent until nearly 1900. He also covers in great detail the Chaco region (centering on what is now Paraguay) and the Pampas area. The detail is excellent and the accounts of the various people are the best I have read (I don't read Spanish, so there are probably superb accounts I am unaware of).

He covers in all several dozen peoples. One aspect is that the encounter with horses altered old systems in many ways and in effect produced new ethnicities from the old (much the same happened elsewhere; see the work of Richard White on the Great Lakes region of the US, fore example).

The book has an interesting list of tribal names as they were known to English and Spanish speakers, and the words they use to identify themselves.

Scintilating topic, poor book

This book has a great topic and it should have been tremendous. Instead it is pedantic and poorly written. The author would have been a great research assistant but the writing should have been left to someone with at least a little skill as an author and storyteller. It is written by one of those British academics who think commentaries on squabbles among academics are so so fascinating and quaint that they should receive more focus than the many stories of horse cultures, most of which are replaced with abstract categories and lists of poorly defined terms. I have no personal stake in any of this. Just a disappointed reader. Considering that it is an unusually expensive ebook it is best avoided.

NUMBERS CAN TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE Have you ever questioned why you feel drawn to live your life in a certain manner? Do you often wonder why you feel close to some people and distant from others? Let the science of Numerology decipher the meaning behind your full-certified name and your date-of-birth numbers. By numbering your days, you too can unlock the door of your hidden self, tap into the mystery of prophecy and relish the unknown possibilities waiting for you in the future. Best yet, the theory behind numerology is simple to grasp. There are no difficult formulas or complicated terminologies to remember. All you have to do is add the numbers together until they collapse into a single digit.

Many numerologists believe that we reincarnate from lifetime to lifetime, and that each number resonates a particular reward or fulfillment according to individuals' karmic debt. For instance: The numbers 1 through 5 show that people are learning about their individual places on earth. The numbers 6 thorough 9 are at a higher frequency. They possess a compassionate vibration. The master numbers 11 and 22 are the archetypes of the numbers 1 through 9; they show others the esoteric dimensions to life. The numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19 are frequently called Karmic numbers. They show where a person has to honor his past debts. I am not dismissing other numerologists' beliefs. I consider the vibrations of the numbers 1 through 9 and the master numbers 11 and 22 to be different, yet essentially the same. I am convinced the Whole-Name number (often called the character number) should be in the forefront. I base my conclusion on the fact that all decisions are made through one's character and that is the only way one can uncover one's truth.

Architecture critic Rybczynski spent four and a half years observing the progress of New Daleville, a residential subdivision designed by one of his former students in a "neotraditional" style that builds houses close together on smaller-than-usual lots in order to foster a stronger sense of community. He is there to witness every stage of development, from the purchase of a large tract of land in rural Pennsylvania through meetings with local community leaders to get planning approval, to the moment when a family moves into one of the first completed units. The account is forthright about the difficulties New Daleville's creators face in making the project work, but Rybczynski (A Clearing in the Distance, etc.) remains optimistic that "the small lots [and] narrow streets... will all make sense" in the future. Occasionally, he provides historical and cultural perspective in a style reminiscent of Malcolm Gladwell, debunking the myth of urban sprawl and explaining American homeowners' preference for single-family dwellings. But Rybczynski also excels at the "close-up," John McPhee's method of reporting, where every interview reads like an intimate conversation, and a simple walk down neighborhood sidewalks can reveal a wealth of history. This charming mixture of reportage and social criticism fits comfortably on the shelf next to David Brooks's On Paradise Drive. (Apr.)

Residential real estate development seems like an unlikely topic for a gripping read, and certainly Rybczynski can't be said to have produced a page-turner. But the author of The Perfect House (2002), among other books, and an architecture critic, most recently for Slate, brings considerable stores of knowledge, curiosity, and writing skill to this readable and at times even suspenseful book about a developer's process of building an exurban subdivision in rural Pennsylvania. In a style that is both digressive (he reviews land development patterns as far back as George Washington's day) and leisurely (including long quotes from sources in the manner of Tracy Kidder), Rybczynski follows the project through its conceptual stages, the politically tricky zoning permits process, and community approvals, to, finally, its finished state as a neotraditional "village" community. Along the way, we learn how land gets developed in the era of the new urbanism and pro- and anti-growth debates, and why so many Americans choose to live in suburbs (as opposed to denser city centers) despite often lengthy commutes. The dirt on suburbs, exurbs, zoning, and land development

"The last harvest" refers to farmers who sell, and jealously covet their right to sell, portions of their farms to developers for housing developments. In his book Rybczynski, as the book's long subtitle makes clear, gives the reader a behind-the-scenes look at how one such tract of land became a neo-traditional rural development, New Daleville, Pennsylvania. Rybczynski writes in a level-headed style without any sense of alarm. There is no good guys/bad guys polarity here, just a lot of people trying to make a living (or find a decent and affordable place to live) in unpredictable economic situations without sacrificing the things they value most in community. If Rybczynski has a point of view other than that of an intelligent, informed social observer who has been writing about architecture and urban development for decades, he keeps it well in check. For readers looking for ammunition, this may be a disappointing read.

Many players are introduced--local farmers looking to sell their land, land developers, zoning boards, building contractors, banking and public officials, sanitation specialists, nearby residents, and potential buyers--but no personal profile dominates the story. They merely come in and out of view like passers-by on the much coveted sidewalks of the "village core" in one of the neotraditional garden exurbs Rybczynski describes. This superficiality made the book a little less interesting to me than his earlier books, like CITY LIFE and WAITING FOR THE WEEKEND, in which extensive historical background were provided, and left me craving more data. This kind of information is in the book (like a four page digression into the post-WWII Levittown phenomenon), it's just not as plentiful as this reader wanted. What the book did do for me, however, was to make me a little less judgmental about new subdivisions I see popping up along the interstates in what seem like strange locations and more compassionate towards the vast range of people who have to come to consensus before even the first spadeful of dirt can be turned. That anything ever gets built and that some of it is even decent looking is indeed a testament to human will and the long-standing American love affair with the single family house.

An impressive piece of work

An impressive piece of work, which I read at two sittings. The review you want to read is Penelope Green's, at the New York Times -- I'll put the link in a comment, as Amazon won't allow outside links in their reviews.

Rybczynski writes a very nice portrait of the contemporary subdivision planning and building process, with the focus on a particular exurb near his home in Philadelphia. In the process, you'll learn a lot about the history of suburban living in America -- and perhaps unlearn some persistent misinformation from urban intellectuals who don't like the suburbs. Highly recommended.

good journalism, so-so social science

When this book focuses on the story of one development in Chester County (a suburb of Philadelphia), it is quite good. It is a breezy, easy-to-read story of how one developer views the zoning process.

Some of the things I got from this book:

*Chester County's suburbanites want to limit development as much as possible. As the author notes, "New houses mean extra cars, extra traffic at rush hour, more kids in the schools, and in the long run, higher taxes."

*As a result, Chester County's zoning board tends to favor low density development; the size of an average lot in Chester County increased from half an acre in the 1960s to an acre and a half in the 1990s.

*One reason housing prices are so high is that developers have to bribe local residents to get new development approved. For example, the developer profiled in this book had to buy neighbors' support by giving away 12,500 square feet of open space.

*In Chester County, the price of land has become a greater percentage than ever of housing prices, due to (according to the developer profiled in this book) zoning-induced scarcity. In 1976, the cost of a lot represented only 15% of a Chester County house's selling price- today, the cost of land represents 30% of the sale price.

*Contrary to conventional wisdom among property rights types, homeowners' associations and the restrictive covenants they enforce are not a result of free choice among consumers. According to the developer of New Daleville, "all our projects include community associations. The local municipal governments insist on it" so that the associations (rather than municipalities) will be responsible for the costs of street maintenance.

On the other hand, the book's attempts to describe broader social trends outside Chester County are occasionally simplistic. For example, the book repeats the common chestnut that the East and West Coasts are more anti-development than the rest of the country - but doesn't supply any real evidence for this assertion.

Similarly, the book's general discussion of sprawl is a bit confused. On the one hand, it claims that there is "no significant relationship betweeen sprawl and urban decline" - but on the other, it correctly points out that "there is no widely agreed-upon definition of sprawl". But if we don't know what sprawl is, how can we know what its results are?
