The Nicot system is not the only non-grafting approach, but it works. This manuscript shares the journey of one beekeeper who taught himself how to raise his own queen honey bees.

Grant F. C. Gillard, a small-scale commercial beekeeper since 1981, shares his insights and philosophies, his field-tested ideas and sustainable methods on how to hang tough, to persevere in the face of adversity, to run and not grow weary, to walk and not faint.

Grant often tells people, “The Nicot kit is not the perfect method to raise queens; but neither is it the only way. It is what it is, but it becomes what we make it. It holds tremendous potential for the average beekeeper to take control of their genetics and shape, even reshape the destiny of their apiaries.”

In essence, that is Grant’s purpose for raising his own queens, particularly in an era of “natural” beekeeping, managing our colonies with reduced and minimalistic treatments, and breeding our own locally-adapted queens from survivor stock. Grant wanted better queens than he was buying from the large, commercial queen producers in the south.
He felt the Nicot system created the best opportunities, and lowered the bar for those beekeepers who didn’t know how to graft.

Grant adds, “My journey raising my own queens covers a number of seasons, more than I can count at this point. I readily admit I’m not the sharpest crayon in the box but I’ve learned to keep on coloring, even if most of my work can’t stay within the lines.”

There’s an old bit of advice that suggests real education is learning from our mistakes. Yet the best, most efficient education learns from the mistakes of others, and more so, it doesn’t take near as long and it’s generally not quite as expensive. Grant readily admits he's made many mistakes, especially in queen rearing.

Grant hopes to accelerate your success so you don’t have to make the same mistakes he made and stumble over the same obstacles he incurred.

Again, Grant adds, “I unswervingly believe the queen to be the heart and soul of the colony, and without a young, productive queen, everything, including a colony’s health and future, is at stake, as I mentioned in the preface.”

When a honey bee colony struggles and wallows in malaise, for any reason, not just a poor queen, it is not uncommon to find beekeepers also experiencing frustration and losing heart.

When beekeepers throw in the towel, especially on a larger scale, there is more at risk than the honey we enjoy in our green tea or the simmering anger of our spouse wondering why we entered such a challenging hobby at such a challenging juncture in time (translation: how come you haven’t harvested any honey in three years and why are we buying new bees to replace those old that died this past winter?)

The absence of adequate pollinators affects everyone who irresponsibly grumbles with their mouths additionally one-third full of food humbly provided for them, courtesy of the tireless, under-appreciated honey bee.

The benchmark of queen rearing is grafting, the mandatory technique that winnows out the potentials from the professionals. specialized knowledge not available elsewhere

In spite of the poor grammar and lack of professional editing, the author imparts some very unique and highly specialized knowledge not available elsewhere. Having followed a short version of this manuscript posted online by Gillard a few years ago, I successfully raised 39 queen cells with my first try! Now I'm back for more and greatly appreciate the expanded instructions that leave no questions unanswered. Gillard covers everything the beekeeper needs to know to be successful. I will recommend this book to all my beekeeping friends.

Wish I had this a year ago!

We bought the Nicot and 10 specially designed double occupancy queen mating nucs for my 13 year old son as he was interested in queen rearing. Because the Nicot doesn't require grafting, I thought it would be an easy way for him to get into it.

By the time Fall came around, I realized our plan of making and selling 20 queens every 4-6 weeks was probably a little too optimistic. The instructions that came with the system were just not detailed enough to be much good.

Already being a fan of Grant Gillard's other beekeeping books, I was elated to see that he had published on the Nicot system. In his typical pastoral style, Grant takes you through the ups and downs of the Nicot system and the incite and experience he shares in this book is invaluable.

I really learned some things that I think will help me get the most out of the Nicot. We are now restarting our queen rearing using Grant's instructions. I am hoping we see better results.

I ordered the Kindle version and there were a few hic-ups in how it displayed on my Kindle. I am not sure what caused it, but a few of the sentences between pages were a bit out of place and the wording rearranged. Though a minor inconvenience, I'm not docking any points.

If you know nothing of raising queens, get another book. The Nicot box is not hard to use. It comes with instructions. There's absolutely nothing in this book that is not included in the instructions. It's just this guy's personal preferences on queen rearing in general. Skip it.

They were not allowed to speak their own languages or follow their traditional customs, and cases of physical, sexual and psychological abuse were common. As a result, the Mission school experience often resulted in isolation, confusion, and intense psychological pain. This has contributed to problems including alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence and general alienation in an entire generation of Native Americans. Dramatic and intensely moving black-and white illustrations by Giago’s daughter Denise illuminate the text.

"We were separated from our cultural and spiritual teachers, our parents and grandparents. We were beaten physically, psychologically and emotionally for being Indian. Our culture, language and spirituality had to be stripped away so that we could become cheap imitations of our mentors, the Franciscan nuns and Jesuit priests, prefects and brothers...There are few Indian families who have not experienced the residual impact of the abuse heaped upon their friends and family members after they were victims of the rape and abuse they experienced at the hands of the missionaries sent out to save their souls. Making the invisible visible

Tim Giago has provided a poignant look into a segment of American history that few know about and others wish was not known. The legacy of Native American Indian children compelled to attend parochial boarding schools has not been a good one. Tim presents a balanced, first-hand depiction of life in a mission school and the abuses suffered at the hands of so-called "Christian" officials and staff. He also shares the enduring spirit of these Native children who survived this ordeal some of whom go on to lead productive lives.

This is an excellent book about a dark part of history. If you need a resource about the Indian Missions Boarding Schools or are at all interested in the topic this is a great book to look into. It also contains the authors original poetry.

From the pauper on the street to those in the arena of Bill Gates this book should be a "must read." We can give in thousands of ways. I have given in many of the forms mentioned here. I like the way the book is organized. Now as I share my ideas for giving with others I have a book to back up and expand my thoughts from.

What a fabulous book and written at the perfect time. Azim and Harvey use lots of anecdotal stories to supplement their philosophy which is a delightful support to all of us big hearted people. i loved this book so much I bought a dozen of them to give out. I'm hoping we can create the power of giving as a community value in our town and in our state. Thank you for writing this book!!!!

The Power of Giving

What better antidote to toxic news about Wall Street greed and corruption than to read one story after another of people helping one another. This book is not about the how of giving, but about the why of it all. It wonderfully delivers on the promise of its (two!) subtitles: "How giving back enriches us all - Creating abundance in your home, at work, and in your community."

Creating abundance, for example, can mean joining a babysitting co-op, thereby affording busy parents a bit of time for themselves. Though elsewhere in the book it's evident that the authors, professional fundraisers Jamal and McKinnon, work with very high-income donors indeed, this book is for EveryCitizen. The authors intersperse funny personal stories from their own lives with poignant vignettes, quotes of wisdom from the ancients, helpful web links, and so forth.

One can feel sick at heart and powerless to do anything effective about huge disasters like hurricanes, or gang violence, or homelessness in a rich country - or even about "smaller" problems in the neighbourhood. American Trappist poet and social activist Thomas Merton captured this malaise well: "To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects, to want to help everyone in everything, is to succumb to the violence of our times."

Jamal and McKinnon have spectacularly not "succumbed to the violence of our times."

Each page seems to have been written with love and laughter. Even though all my life I've donated time and money to various causes; have worked as a fundraiser for non-profits; and know the many benefits of giving, I love this book because it's an invitation to everyone - not just the fundraisers - to experience the happiness and the health we create - and the meaningful relationships we build - when reach out to others.

The subtle design of the book helps you slow down a bit, taking pleasure in the relaxing act of turning the well-printed pages... of considering how the next idea might play out in one's own circle of friends.

Not a whole book but part of one

The complete story as this is not a series of books, but really just one book was decent. There were times where it was amateurish and juvenile in the attitude and actions of the characters but it was not half bad. There was also a lot of drama that made me give a mental eye roll then "one book" would end and you would have to get the next to continue the story. Thank goodness for Kindleunlimited! I don't personally like this style of book writing as you have a lot of "books" but only a few true books , because 5 parts of a story to make a whole story is not a series. I don't think I will be keeping it.

About the Author
Brad Matthews is the director of purchasing and storeroom operations at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Directing a storeroom staff of more than two dozen, Mr. Matthews is responsible for all purchases on the college's Hyde Park, NY campus, including more than $6.5 million of food products for the college each year. Mr. Matthews and his staff must assure the value of those purchases through proper receipt, evaluation, storage, and timeliness of deliveries. He also oversees the distribution to the 41 kitchens and bakeshops of all food coming into the CIA campus.

Paul Wigsten is the produce buyer at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, NY. Mr. Wigsten also owns and operates Wigsten Farm in Pleasant Valley, NY with his family. In 2002, Wigsten Farm was awarded the Agri-Business Award by the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation. Along with Mr. Matthews, Mr. Wigsten was awarded the 2006 Glynwood Harvest Good Neighbor Award.

Excellent basic reference for produce

As a CIA student, I was issued this book as the text for our class on produce product knowledge. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You can tell the authors get real joy out of describing an item, when it's in season, how it should look and taste, etc...This book doesn't contain recipes, but occasionally one of the authors will mention a simple way to prepare an item that sounds delicious. Some of the more exotic or obscure items (to the US market) aren't in the book, but this is a very solid offering that covers 90+% of the produce the average person will eat.

The book assesses emerging new security threats, including the impact of climate change and the issues arising from increased human traffic to Antarctica by scientists, tourists, and mariners. The authors call into question whether the existing Antarctic security construct framed around the Antarctic Treaty remains viable, or whether new Antarctic paradigms are necessary for the future governance of the region. The contributions to this volume engage with a security discourse which has expanded beyond the traditional military domain to include notions of security from the perspective of economics, the environment and bio-security. About the Author

Dr Alan D. Hemmings is a Canberra-based specialist on Antarctic governance and Adjunct Associate Professor at Gateway Antarctica at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. The author of a hundred plus articles on Antarctic affairs, he is also co-editor of Looking South: Australia’s Antarctic Agenda.

Donald R Rothwell is Professor of International Law at the ANU College of Law, Australian National University. His research on intersecting areas of international law has a focus on law of the sea, law of the polar regions, and implementation of international law within Australia.

Karen N. Scott is an Associate Professor in law at the University of Canterbury and researches and teaches in the areas of public international law, law of the sea and Antarctic law and policy. She is the Editor of the New Zealand Yearbook of International Law.
