IN the past few years, few aspects of Irish society have changed more than the pub. First it was the smoking ban and the invention of the Irish beer garden for outdoor smokers. Then it suddenly, and necessarily, became deeply unsexy to drink and drive. Such crackdowns came at a cost to the Irish pub. In the countryside, the unthinkable happened. The old pubs and shebeens have begun closing down. It's not all about smoking and driving. We've changed as a people.
We haven't time to sit about in a pub all day yakking about whatever. We don't need to go for a pint to feel in touch; we can send an email or log on to Facebook. And besides, isn't it just as easy to go to the supermarket, fill the trolley with cheap grog and kick back at home?
Small wonder that about 30 of our once treasured pubs are closing down every month. And for every pub that's closing, a dozen more are whacking salt and pepper canisters on every table and putting giant plasma screens on the walls.
These are desperate times for the country pub. Traditional grocery bars are on the way out, too. Also on the line are those fundamental one-room watering holes, often owned by the same family since time began, where the drink is served from dusty bottles and the newspapers are yellower than a duck's bill.
Let's fast-forward to 2050, when a granddaughter sits me down and asks what made a good country pub. This is what I will say: "Sweetheart, back in the old days a good country pub was a place where you could gather your senses and then let them go again. The air was thick with tobacco smoke, the floor as dark as coal. We'd sit on mismatched chairs, perhaps by an open fire, and let the banter roll.
"Giddy fiddles and rattling tongues would light the darkest shadows as we dug in deep and lit the night and forgot about the morrows. Along the bar, perched high on stools, toothless old men, both genius and fool, guffawing and snoring and drinking too much, supping stouts and gold whiskeys instead of their lunch."
And she will probably wonder what could have been remotely charming about being in a confined space with large numbers of drink-sozzled, chain-smoking old codgers. It'll be a hard one to sell.
But there are many who will understand the magic and allure of these endangered establishments. The towns and cities are weathering the revolution better than the remote country pubs. The drinker is always at ease when the bed is just a walk away. God gave us pubs to get away from it all. But if a new age of country pubs is necessary, I pray it is not comprised solely of charmless venues rumbling with ear-splittingly bad music, giant plasma screens showing matches between soccer clubs I've never heard of and bar staff who scowl.
Modern Ireland is a multicultural, technologically advanced, cash-hungry whirlpool. The once dominant Catholic Church is all but redundant and many of the old institutions have gone with it. The Irish pub may survive the meltdown but many will disappear in the process. This book is about those some of those that we hope survive.

Great Irish Pub Education in this book!

I ordered this book because I am building an Irish pub in my house. This book is a must for anyone who is doing the same. The pictures are fantastic! What is interesting is the contrast between Dublin pubs and pubs in rural Ireland. The Dublin pubs have rich decor and beautiful wood or Iron accents. However, the rural pubs do not usually have anthing like that. They may have a few Guinness signs or pictures but mostly the rural pubs seem poor. Most of those pubs have mix matched chairs or tables and seem very run down to me.

A few things that all Ireland pubs do not have like those in America - Shamrocks, Leprechauns, and tacky ST. Patricks day decorations. This includes silly Irish sayings on the wall. What you will find for decor is atleast one Guinness sign, whiskey jugs, and black & white photos of the Irish past. Surprisingly the traditional color for a pub in Ireland is red and not green. Out of the 30 or so pubs in the book only like two have green walls or decor. I would say most have some shade of red or dark brown. Overall this is a really good book. My only critique is that there are no County Donegal pubs in the book. Donegal is the most North Western part of Ireland where the Irish Celtic language is still spoken. I had to search online for those pubs.

First-rate text and photography

This book is a joy to read, accompanied by some superb images of Irish pubs. One has to envy the author and the photographer for having "suffered" through some seven hundred pubs, only to winnow the selection down to less than fifty. Bunbury's prose is engaging and entertaining, as well as informative - precisely what one would expect of an Irish storyteller. If you like Ireland, pubs, coffee-table books, enjoyable reading, in any combination of the above, this is a very nice book to have.

Beautiful pictures! Exactly what I had in mind when I purchase it, as a present for my Irish father in law! I gave him this book and a good bottle of Irish whiskey! Now we are planing a trip!

This book is fabulous ! After ordering this for my daughter's college class, she began speaking like an authoritative politician :-) Seriously, it was a great book for an A for my fabulous daughter's college class. She now "public speaks" around the house and "learns me". Joking aside, great book. I didn't have to read it, I saw the results in action !

Very Useful!

This book has everything I've ever really needed to look up. It covers a lot of different topics, gives you specifications that you see all the time, and so much more. As an interior design student, I highly suggest it for other students and professionals as well. I've purchased a lot of interior design books over the last few years and this one has probably been the most useful.

We are currently building our third custom home, and I wish I had found this book two homes ago. It contains the answers to zillions of questions that come up during construction and design/decorating. Avoiding just one mistake more than pays for the book.

I wanted to know if I should go back to school for interior design since I love it as a hobby. This book is super concise but thorough, like a cliff notes of interior design, and bored me so bad I realized a hobby is enough for me. Great for students, professionals, perfectionists, or people currently building a home to understand what their designers and architects are doing and why.

Great, Gritty Poetry

The words that John Emery weaves together in `What I Wrote About You' create visceral and gritty poems that pile on top of one another, forcing you to contemplate the topics that are dissected on the page. Sometimes his poetry seems to be longing for more, other times it appears jilted and hurt, but most of all it comes across fully developed and emotionally charged. This book is separated into four distinct sections, and it is easy to see how Emery's skills as a writer progress as the pages turn.

Some of my favorite poems were Waiting for Trains, Showering in the Dark, the all encompassing Alphabet Poem, and The Day After. While the poems start as single entities, as the book continues they begin to connect together more frequently. The short poetic lines start to linger and contain more detailed lines of prose. This collection certainly shows Emery's talents as a poet, and forces the reader to come to terms with the gritty substances that make up the mess of our humanity.

A pedagocal masterpiece. A great way to get into Bayesian statistics, or really just statistics in general.

This is the perfect book for people that have some knowledge of statistics (maybe one course) and want to get into Bayesian statistics. It's a pedagogical masterpiece that includes just the right amount of math. It's also extremely pragmatic, both telling how to do thing, while at the same time not skimping on the why. I just can't recommend this book enough!

A very original and readable text that might transform you into a data analysis wizard!

This is a very readable and even *entertaining* text that serves as an integrated treatment of the history, philosophy, and practical implementation details (in R) of state of the art quantitative methods. The introduction to Bayesian thought that is provided is the most accessible that I have encountered, and for this alone I am sure I will continually reference this text and I will certainly share it with others. This text also stands out because of the data sets, example problems, and analytical forks in the road that McElreath leads us to. These examples will feel very familiar and relevant to practicing scientists in academia (e.g. public health, social sciences, biological sciences) or data analysts in the private sector. It provides original and accessible introductions into the assumptions and practical details of multivariate regression, generalized linear models, MCMC estimation, and hierarchical modeling. It also provides an excellent discussion of the perils of over-fitting one's models, and the role of information criteria in carrying out model comparison. If you have taken an "intro to statistics" class but now want to learn the craft as practiced by professionals, this is the book to get. I could have saved myself hundreds of hours of self-directed trial and error learning in graduate school (and after) had this text been available. The content of this book has been developed over a decade+ of McElreath's teaching and mentoring of graduate students, post docs, and other colleagues, and it really shows. This book's huge achievement is its ability to provide great coverage of relevant history, theory, and nitty-gritty practical implementation details in a coherent and readable fashion.

The Best Bayes Book

Probably the best book on Bayesian inference I've read. Dr. McElreath has a very clear, informative yet entertaining way of explaining these concepts and the book includes excellent example code in R (available at github as well). Also, lectures from one of his courses that follow this book are available on youtube.

Sustainability has become a buzzword in the last decade, but its full meaning is complex, emerging from a range of different sectors. In practice, it has become the springboard for millions of individuals throughout the world who are forging the fastest and most profound social transformation of our time-the Sustainability Revolution.

The Sustainability Revolution paints a picture of this largely unrecognized phenomenon from the point of view of five major sectors of society:

• Community (government and international institutions)
• Commerce (business)
• Natural Resources (forestry, farming, fisheries, etc.)
• Ecological Design (architecture, technology)
• Biosphere (conservation, biodiversity, etc.).

The book analyses sustainability as defined by each of these sectors in terms of the principles, declarations and intentions that have emerged from conferences and publications, and which serve as guidelines for policy decisions and future activities. Common themes are then explored, including:

• an emphasis on stewardship
• the need for economic restructuring promoting no waste and equitable distribution
• an understanding and respect for the principles of nature
• the restoration of life forms, and
• an intergenerational perspective on solutions.

Concluding that these themes in turn represent a new set of values that define this paradigm shift, The Sustainability Revolution describes innovative sustainable projects and policies in Colombia, Brazil, India and the Netherlands and examines future trends. Complete with a useful resources list, this is the first book of its kind and will appeal to business and government policy makers, academics, and all interested in sustainability.

Andrés R. Edwards is an educator, author, media designer and environmental systems consultant who has specialized in sustainability topics for the past 15 years. The founder and president of EduTracks, an exhibit design and fabrication firm specializing in green building and sustainable education programs for parks, towns and companies, he lives in Northern California.

I appreciated both what was presented about sustainability and how carefully Edwards compares the environmentalism and sustainability movements. He doesn't "diss" environmentalism, but illuminates a lot of general principles of the sustainability movement that show it to be significantly more sustainable as a movement.

I found each chapter to be complete, but there is a lot of parallel structure in the book so I limited myself to a chapter a day so I wouldn't confuse things between chapters.

Next edition: I could have used more explanation for why social equity is the third E (Ecology, Economy, Equity) of sustainability. I can deduce it on my own, but I just could have used some help understanding this at a fundamental level.

Overall, I loved this book and read just about every word of the text. I have marked up and flagged the extensive reference sections and have already chased down a few follow-up topics.

A good survey.

Another reviewer called the book a "primer" on sustainability, and I would like to emphasize this quality. If you know very little about sustainability, this is a book for you. If you have been following the news in this area, this book will not enlighten you further. Another comment I had was that the author compares the "Sustainability Revolution" to the Industrial Revolution, and I don't believe the sustainability movement is at a revolutionary caliber yet - not that I don't want it to be.

A Sustainable Framework

The Sustainability Revolution provides a broad portrait of a paradigm shift, as the sub title claims. Although I checked this out of the library, this is a book to own and refer to especially if you are interested in furthering sustainable best practices or even wondering what they are. Sustainability can be a challenge to get understanding and organized around and this book neatly categorizes it in 7 chapters and concludes with a substantial resource section; it is well referenced throughout for additional follow-up.

First we read about how sustainability's environmental roots were expanded to include consideration of the 3 E's, ecology, economy and equity; sustainability therefore looks at the interdependencies of the 3E's and engages a diversity of stakeholders when we broaden the undeniable scope of impact. Ecology is the environmental consideration in which we shift to a long term perspective, acknowledge and respond in turn to our dependence on our life support systems. Looking at economy we see a healthy environment and a healthy economy coexisting, not the opposition of these as is often still purported. The human well being requirement of the sustainability triangle is referred to herein as equity or equality as it acknowledges that the well being of the individual is dependant on the well being of the community and calls us toward a spirit of cooperation and ethics within the distribution of basic resources such as food, shelter and water and a greater emphasis on the value of education. The author then proceeds to describe sustainability principles in 5 basic categories, Community, Commerce, Natural Resources, Ecological Design, and the Biosphere with education as a key component of each as we weave our way into the sustainable path. Each of the respective principles are presented in a separate highlighted box within each chapter and then commented on by the author.

Sustainability and Community describes tools created by task forces and working groups to tackle the challenges of bringing the 3E's into balance by implementing long term systematic approaches at all levels, local, regional, national and international communities. These include the Ontario Roundtable on Environment and Economy (local initiative,) the Minnesota Planning Environmental Quality Board Principles of Sustainable Development for Minnesota (regional,) The Netherlands National Environmental Policy (national,) and the Earth Charter's Commission and ICLEI (international.) All told these community based principles integrate a diversity of perspectives and interests toward defining and working toward a shared vision for a sustainable future.

Sustainability and Commerce reveals how business practices and the long term health of our planet and all its life forms are advantaged when business mimics natural systems rather than destroys them. The precautionary principle is presented as an ethical standard wherein the company realizes that it must consider its investors and the community as a whole, igniting the conscience of business activity; if the best way for an individual to live is to do no harm, the same standard, already prevalent in other countries, must apply to the organization that has more power to do harm if precaution were not taken. The precautionary principle for example is about placing responsibility to avoid harm onto the manufacturer. It was implemented in 2003 in San Francisco at the municipal level. The Natural Step can be used by a company to assess its impact with respect to the laws of nature as it combines science and management best practices. The Houston principles links labor with environmental movements and offers the power of creative cooperation to bolster communities through jobs and healthy ecosystems. The CERES principles offer a voluntary approach to organizations that seek a conscience by providing a framework in which sustainability practices can be adopted in a supportive manner, and includes a risk reduction clause; in a sense the CERES principles leverage peer pressure and provide sharing of sustainable successes among its participants.

Sustainability and Natural Resources describes the challenge for industries directly benefiting from resource extraction, the fuel from the former industrial revolution, and our shared need for survival such that even the American Petroleum Institute calls for conservation and investment in renewables but continues to ignore equity in resource usage. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) wood is widely available and promotes sustainable forest usage while calling on each of us to consider where and how the products we consume are appropriated as does the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) that requires sustainable fishery. The Asilomar Declaration for Sustainable Agriculture practices speaks to the need to make our food systems sustainable; our broken system is witnessed in recent outbreaks of food contamination and the cost of food rising with the cost of energy as we grow our food large distances from the eating populations. Sustainable agriculture requires ethics for land usage and animal treatment and calls for a shift toward local food production, a recognition for the value of rural and farming lifestyles, heightened awareness regarding the true cost of unsustainable methods for growing food and the need to reduce government subsides that allow the mega corporate farm to continue in a manner that most would find unconscionable when its impacts are understood.

Sustainability and Ecological Design shows that nature holds the key to how we can design the new way of producing, living and working in balance as it considers the interaction of architecture, people and nature. The Hannover Principles require that decisions are made within the context of Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit; considering these essential elements reveals humans as being a part of and interdependent with nature and requires responsibility for the consequences of design. A waste free holistic life cycle approach to manufacturing is described in detail by the Hannover founders in "Cradle to Cradle Remaking The Way we Make Things." The Todds' Principles of Ecological Design place nature at the center of the design process and incorporate energy, architecture, food production and waste management with "bio-regional" approaches. The Sanborn Principles further include the needs of communities bringing beauty and practicality into our living environments in the form of parks, culture and healthy buildings. The USGBC promotes its LEED standards to create and assure healthy and energy effective buildings a rising major area of focus in building and renovation because of the magnitude of long term benefits with minimal increase in short term costs.

Sustainability and the Biosphere calls each of us to reconsider our relationship with nature and each other, the crux of sustainability. Deep Ecology requires self realization to connect all human and non human life forms with the force that pulses through all life and cites diversity as a key value characteristic to remind us that we must act in line with the inherent value that promoting the well being of all life brings. The Charter for Rights and Responsibilities for the Environment extends Deep Ecology to all species further emphasizing interdependence with the natural world. The Biomimicy Principles as described in detail by Janine Benyus' book Biomimicry, reveal the lessons we can learn from nature such as the fact that nature recycles everything, nature runs on sunlight and nature uses only the energy it needs. I especially like the principle that nature taps the power of limits because it looks at nature's ability to leverage limits to its advantage such as seasonality instead of the 20th century human response to dare these limits into submission while breeding sickness. Permaculture Principles expands Biomimicry toward the integration of sustainability within economic, social and even political systems as these systems interact and can be designed to work with nature.

The final chapter, Future Pathways charts and links all these principles herein that I took the time lay out in as sense to honor the importance of this body of work and the contributors to the sustainable revolution many included in the "advance praise" intro. These principles in total call for stewardship, an intergenerational perspective and offer nature as our teacher and require that we reach far beyond `green,' as we forge the sustainable path. Concluding with a robust Resource section further affirms that you can read this book to get started or to keep going. After reading this book you will be able to answer the question "If the industrial revolution is over what's next?" and be able to describe, explore and embrace the opportunities and challenges that "the sustainability revolution" offers.

Awesome reference

This book is definitely a bible for a beginning quilter. It tells you what equipment you need to buy, how to get started, common issues that may arise, and oodles of designs to keep you busy for years. It's very user-friendly and you can teach yourself to quilt.

I love it. It is easy to follow and answers the most basic questions in easy to understand language. The pictures are clear and easy to follow. Well worth it.

A Complete Reference Book

If you want detail for every step of the quilting process, this is the book for you. It tells you what size needle to use for piecing vs. quilting; type of thread; types of batting; fabric quality; stitch length; how to determine the grain of the fabric; how to press seams; how to assemble a quilt; quick tips for cutting and sewing; how to make borders; the best way to fold and store a quilt; how to create articles other than a bed quilt (purse, tote bag, place mats, pillow covers, table runner, clothing); what equipment you need; how to organize your work space; how to move a full-size quilt through your machine. I took my highlighter and went crazy. It could be a bit daunting for a beginner so I would pair this book with Marsha McCloskey's "Quick Classic Quilts" (for traditional quilts) or with Margaret Rolfe's "A Quilter's Ark" (for contemporary foundation quilts with animal designs). They have much abbreviated instructions that would be easier to follow for a first-time quilter. Then I would use "The Quilting Bible" as a reference to make sure I understood the techniques to get truly professional results.
