India is the top provider of surrogacy services in the world, with a multi-million dollar surrogacy industry that continues to grow exponentially, as increasing numbers of couples from developed nations look for wombs in which to grow their babies. Some scholars have exulted transnational surrogacy for the possibilities it opens for infertile couples, while others have offered bioethical cautionary tales, rebuked exploitative intended parents, or lamented the exploitation of surrogate mothers—but very little is known about the experience of and transaction between surrogate mothers and intended parents outside the lens of the many agencies that control surrogacy in India. Drawing from rich interviews with surrogate mothers and egg donors in Bangalore, as well as twenty straight and gay couples in the U.S. and Australia, Discounted Life focuses on the processes of social and market exchange in transnational surrogacy.  Sharmila Rudrappa interrogates the creation and maintenance of reproductive labor markets, the function of agencies and surrogacy brokers, and how women become surrogate mothers. Is surrogacy solely a labor contract for which the surrogate mother receives wages, or do its meanings and import exceed the confines of the market? Rudrappa argues that this reproductive industry is organized to control and disempower women workers and yet her interviews reveal that, by and large, the surrogate mothers in Bangalore found the experience life affirming. Rudrappa explores this tension, and the lived realities of many surrogate mothers whose deepening bodily commodification is paradoxically experienced as a revitalizing life development.  A detailed and moving study, Discounted Life delineates how local labor markets intertwine with global reproduction industries, how Bangalore’s surrogate mothers make sense of their participation in reproductive assembly lines, and the remarkable ways in which they negotiate positions of power for themselves in progressively untenable socio-economic conditions.

• the descriptive level - the "whatness" of what the child feels

• the intensified vitalizing level  - gaining access to feeling itself for children with chronic dissociation, despairing apathy or 'undrawn' autism.

The book offers a structured schema drawing on and updating some of her classic work. It is designed to help the therapist to find the right level of interpretation in work with clients and, provides particular help with the unreachable child. This is really a great book if you are an experienced psychoanalyst of any school of thought. It begins with the Klein-Bion perspective and adds more ideas of how to interpret primitive mental states in patients. Would highly recommend no matter what school of thought you have been taught. It probably can not be understood well for someone looking for a self help book and even for psychologists that have not studied about psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

A lovely love story .....

The Doctor's Runaway Bride by Sarah Morgan

Dr. Luca Zattoni follows his pregnant runaway bride to England, only to find that Tia doesn't want to see or speak to him again. He surprises her when he takes a job as obstitrician at the hospital where she is a nurse/midwife. Luca knows that their whirlwind affair in Italy and her unexpected pregnancy, has really scared Tia. But he can't understand her reluctance to continue their relationship; she refuses to tell him what shook her up so much that she left him waiting at the altar. Tia's been in love with Luca from the moment she met him, but she knows that Luca really doesn't want to marry her and only proposed because of the baby. And on her wedding day, she overheard Luca's mother in conversation with a beautiful woman. And what she heard made her positive that Luca would be happier without her and her baby.

This was a charming story. I love the way Luca moves in on Tia's world, but still respects her wishes to step back and give them both room to get to know each other. Ms. Morgan created a lovely love story and I'm glad Tia and Luca found their HEA.

It Was Alright

This book was alright, nothing exceptional but not awful either. I actually really liked the hero, he wasn't overly aggressive or demanding like the hero's in these books usually are. The heroine could have used a bit more of a backbone, many of their problems could have been resolved if she'd just talked with the hero.

My main issue with this book was that it spent entirely to much time on medical issues that had nothing to do with the development between the hero and heroine. If I wanted to have the definition of a bunch of medical terms than I would invest in a text book. I wish the author would have spent more pages on the development of their relationship than on their jobs. Also, one more thing that bothered be was the overuse of the word bleep. I don't know if that's a common word in the UK or not but it was severely overused in this book.

I agree with the review of It Was Alright. I thought I was reading a medical book on pregnant women and giving birth. It was entirely too much medical jargon for me. The only good thing in this book is the depiction and description of Luca Zattoni. He was to die for and the only thing that kept me reading. Tia acted and sounded like a little girl. She wanted things all her way without having any proof that Luca loved someone else. She only overheard a conversation and unlike most women confronted with a piece of news on the day of her wedding, instead of confronting him and asking for answers she runs off like a spoiled child. I am a fan of Sarah Morgan but this is one book I could have done without.

"It was the twitching hour."

Sean Chiller is a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Winnipeg, Canada, working with the OMG Division (Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs). He and his wife, Tracy, are driving to Fargo, North Dakota with their daughter Ashley. Ashley has Cystic Fibrosis and there's an experimental treatment available in Fargo that might help lengthen her life.

They get caught in a terrible blizzard and end up in the fenced community of Berzerker and then the nightmares really start for this little family.

Author Cage did a fine job of building the suspense in this tale. The storyline involving GMO crops is almost too believable. The blizzard adds another level of scariness that I particularly enjoyed.

There are many different characters in this story, from townspeople, mad doctors, a military presence, to the berzerkers themselves. Character development is handled well and there are many surprises with the different characters.

I like horror stories that take place in frigid areas - don't know why but I just do. And the author used the inclement weather as almost another character in the book.

This is a scary horror story with blood and guts galore (so be forewarned). It not only has the physical aspects of a horror story but has some psychological scary bits thrown in too.

Why I don't Like Small Towns

A young family en route to a very important medical appointment end up taking a detour into the Twilight Zone. The setting is out in the middle of nowhere; behind a tall, fenced perimeter is a small town. This town is controlled by a genetics corporation that uses locals for testing and happens to own surrounding law enforcement. It also helps they have the backing of the US Government.

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) goes far beyond the local corn in this town. Young men are not at home with their families, but rather become part of a plot to create the ultimate killer.

The Chiller family just want to get out of Dodge, but car troubles are the least of their worries. Due to a bad snow storm, they accidentally gain access to this small town, and the locals aren't too pleased.

I found the story dragged a bit in places and overall it could have been chopped down a bit. There are some interesting action sequences and it is a tad gory, which is always a good thing!! I always assumed small-town living would drive to nuts, but this town takes the prize.

Trapped in a Strange Creepy Little Town!

Once you start "Berzerker" by Theo Cage, you'll be just as trapped as the main characters, unable to stop until you figure out what's going on and how to get yourself out of a situation that continues to become increasingly creepy and surreal. As the snow falls and Sean Chiller and his family become trapped in the strange little town of Berzerker, the weather itself can be felt as its own menacing entity. But what lurks in this town is far from weather-induced. You won't be able to put this book down until you reach the heart-pounding, surprising and ultimately, satisfying, ending.
