Return of a Classic

A good solid Christie in a sturdy and economical hardcover edition. No special features, but the text doesn't need any. 4:50 FROM PADDINGTON generally makes the short list of "best Christies." One of Miss Jane Marple's friends has seen a murder taking place on another passenger train, and, absent a body or a missing persons complaint, no one takes an old lady seriously--except Miss marple. I'd like to say that the solution to the murder hangs together nicely, adn I never saw it coming.

some good some bad

My biggest complaint about this book is that most of the songs are very painfully simple. A beginner pianist would probably enjoy these more than I did... That being said a lot of the songs are still very pretty. Just wish they were a little more challenging for a 'piano solo' book. Probably should be called 'easy piano'.

Amazingly Cheap Collectors Item ... but missing one very crucial piece.

With the addition of the never before published "Leaving Hogwarts," this product is phenomenal. They truly chose the best pieces of each movie, however, A "Window to the Past" from Prisoner of Azkaban is missing. For some, Prisoner of Azkaban is the best score, and this product definitely plays tribute to "Double Trouble" but misses out on the other great theme of the third movie.
There are a bunch of selections from the first movie, then the second and third get ripped off. There is the great Spider theme from Chamber of Secrets, along with "Gilderoy Lockhart" and the "Flying Car" that are missing. But apart from the absence of these pieces, this product is a great buy. Retail on each individual movie's sheet music is $15, this book is less than $20 and comes with the best of the Harry Potter scores (for the most part).
I recommend it to every Harry Potter fan, especially for the price. Even if you don't play piano or read sheet music, it is amazing just to have the complete collection in one book for such a great price.

Impossible to glean information from reviews....

Truly impossible to pick an appropriate piano book to play & enjoy, either for oneself or one's student, if you can not see an example of the music!!!

These reviews are worthless. A 13 year old who has played for 2 years could be playing Bach 2 part inventions, or still pecking away at Alfreds Complete Adult Method, Level II.

I have also noticed over the years, that some publishing company will claim their collection is suitable for beginne & /or easier piano, only to find that their measures & notes are larger, containing fewer notes, & the music is printed with biiiigggg not and spaces between each note, while the notes chosen still move with monstrous, unnatural, improbable leaps & sometimes less than harmonous intervals. I believe this is technique is actually HARDER for a beginning pianist, requiring them to visually keep track of their note through more empty space filled with lines & spaces, before finding the next note, while the sound produced does not make sense to their listening ear. This skill being a more advanced special awareness & mature brain acumen.

PLEASE allow potential buyers to see several representative pages of EACH of the different pieces!!! No one would take the time to try to make up the middle of these pieces if you allowed them to see the beginning & end of a song, (for HEAVEN'S SAKE!!!)

Great explanation of composting.

Steve Solomon's "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades" is a truly wonderful book and a must for anyone gardening west of the Cascades. "Composting" is a very good book, but is variable. It feels as if Solomon is getting a little crotchety as he ages, and the book would have profited from an editor with a strong pen since the writing style occasionally gets annoying.

Solomon's explanation of Carbon Nitrogen ratios is excellent. I now understand better why my compost does what it does at different speeds different times of the year. He is realistic about the benefits of compost and does not uncritically accept the Rodale "Organic" party line. However, I think he goes too far in rejecting it. Solomon has clearly seen many people overcompost and damage their soil's ecology. Yes, too much of anything can be bad and one can increase humus content irrationally, but I think he is too negative. Most of the gardens I see have been neglected and one really can "build the soil" to improve fertility, moisture retention, etc. I would prefer the message to be "It takes time. Don't try build your soil too fast. Do soil tests regularly." not "only try replace the humus you take out". He ends one section with "I conclude that organic matter is somewhat dangerous stuff whose use should be limited...". On this I disagree strongly. In my experience it is a rare case when someone overcomposts. However, I must strongly agree with Solomon on the advantages of using soil testing and using a good organic fertilizer mixture in addition to applying compost on your garden. He gives his famous recipe for complete organic fertilizer (I originally saw it in "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades") and I can vouch for its efficacy.

Solomon raves about poor nutrient value of vegetables caused by over composting. I only partially buy his nutrition arguments. Yes, poor soil can grow veggies with poor nutrition. But the argument does not follow not to build your soil. If veggies grow well and taste great, I trust that measure of nutrition. On the nutrition arguments
he is doing what he accuses other of, making an assertion and providing no
evidence to back it up.

If you are interesting on composting the book is well worth reading. In fact, it is probably more fun because of the flaws I have just complained about.

Good Content, Poor Format (Kindle)

The content and writing stlye for this book are great. What I can't stand is the horrible formatting in the Kindle version. Several instances of words being connected together without spaces in between, tables being completely unformatted, and just plain weird paragraph formatting make this a terrible book for the Kindle. I'm highly disappointed with the Kindle version. Buyer beware.

Composting - The Bible

Steve Solomon's work in producing the Organic Gardener's Composting is second to none. His research standards are those of a true academic, yet his writing and general presentation of the material is accessible, non formulaic and for a book of this nature, subtly novelesque.
I headed straight for the chapter on Sir Albert Howard's composting methods at Indore in the 1930's and wasn't disappointed - fascinating reading. Also especially interesting was the chapter on vermicomposting. Steve doesn't seem to add material just for the sake of it unless it meets his rigorous criteria. Could only get hold of a 2nd hand copy at a premium price, but have no regrets - it's a gem!

Although Bergler is a psychiatrist, he disagrees with Freud's explanation of male homosexuality. Bergler contends that a baby regards his mother as a witch who is trying to kill him. When the mother feeds the baby milk, the baby thinks she is trying to choke him. When the mother bathes the baby, the baby thinks she is trying to drown him. If a boy becomes fixated on this stage, homosexuality results.
Bergler has a brief explanation of female homosexuality, but I didn't understand it.

AN EARLY CLAIM THAT PSYCHOANALYTIC TREATMENT CAN BE A "CURE"

Bergler wrote in the Foreword to this 1956 book, "The statement that psychoanalytically oriented psychiatry can cure male homosexuality and Lesbianism could not have been made a decade ago. At that time, a sterile pessimism on this score pervaded the science... today, psychiatric-psychoanalytic treatment can cure homosexuality... It is granted that heterosexuality per se does not guarantee emotional health... But there also exist healthy heterosexuals, and there are no healthy homosexuals... All this can be remedied by information combined with treatment, provided the prospective patient really wants to change."

For Bergler, "homosexuality is a neurotic disease." (Pg. 13) He adds, "Homosexuals display an amount of irrational and violent jealousy unparalleled in heterosexual relationships." (Pg. 25) Homosexuality is "an unconscious search for a duplicate of oneself as a boy." (Pg. 64) He asserts, "At times, the homosexual's externally visible narcissism reaches really megalomaniacal proportions." (Pg. 163)

He argues, "I make the positive statement that homosexuality has an excellent prognosis in psychiatric-psychoanalytic treatment of one to two years' duration, with a minimum of three appointments each week---provided the patient really wishes to change." (Pg. 176) He adds, "a `therapeutically usable' portion of the guilt must be present, or must be therapeutically retrievable, if the specific homosexual is to be a suitable candidate for recovery." (Pg. 179)

Bergler's pronouncements seem astoundingly "dated," even given that they are nearly sixty years old. But they can be interesting reading for one studying the historical background of psychoanalytical appraisals of the subject.

Awful garbage from the Stone Age

Prior to the removal of homosexuality from the official list of mental illnesses in 1973, it was quite common for psychiatrists to write toxic drivel like this, combining bizarre theories with fire-breathing homophobia. Bergler was the very worst of a bad lot. It is impossible to read this rubbish without seeing how extremely hostile Bergler was to gay people. Gore Vidal opined that these shrinks had been raised by mothers who wanted them to become clergymen, so they took a moralistic mentality with them into the field of "medicine."
